Desert Paradises Book Launch

  • AUDRC Level 2, 1002 Hay Street Perth Australia (map)

Join us for the much-anticipated launch of AUDRC’s latest book:

Desert Paradises: Surveying the landscapes of Dubai’s urban model’

Dr Julian Bolleter

Agriculture, which started in the Fertile Crescent in ancient times, has spread substantially and now covers a significant swathe of the Earth's surface. 12,000 years later, Dubai – at the opposite end of The Gulf – is having an undue influence on urban development patterns around the world. While Dubai is often viewed by the West as being a ‘fantasy world in the desert’ we should not underestimate its significance to the broader context. As Rem Koolhaas says: ‘the emerging model of the Gulf city is being multiplied in a vast zone ... The Gulf is not reconfiguring itself, its reconfiguring the world.’

Praise for ‘Desert paradises’ from Alan Berger Professor of Advanced Urbanism at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “Bolleter’s concise socio-cultural and econo-political overview gives way to documentation of the greed, ecological erasure, and distorted forms of practice that have gone awry in the desert ‘parascape'. His ground truthed methods shed important insight for designers to re-imagine new narratives for the region that can adjust imbalances before engineering gives way to total social and environmental collapse.”

Please join us for a tour of Dubai’s influential urban model at AUDRC on the 16th of August 6pm for a 6.30 start.
