Graduate Certificate in Urban Design

The Graduate Certificate in Urban Design provides students with a preliminary overview of the discipline of urban design and an introduction to its core principles, theories and practices.  Students graduating with the Certificate would be familiar with the basic characteristics of urban design but would not be understood by the market as ‘urban designers’.  The Certificate course aims to provide a ‘top-up’  qualification to professional practitioners and graduates of related fields.  Students can choose to enter at either semester 1 or semester 2 but must seek advice prior to enrolling from the AUDRC on structuring their studies. Entry in to this course requires an undergraduate degree in a related field with a weighted  average of at least 60%, or as recognized by the Faculty on the recommendation of the AUDRC’s Academic Committee.

Graduate Diploma in Urban Design

The Graduate Diploma in Urban Design aims to provide a focused year of urban design history, theory, implementation strategy and studio based learning. The Graduate Diploma builds on the Graduate Certificate and offers students some experience as individual designers and as participants in interdisciplinary groups assigned to working on the complex nature of urban design issues.  The Graduate Diploma also offers students preliminary experience in conducting independent research.  Students graduating with a Diploma will have a working knowledge of urban design but would not be accepted by the market as ‘urban designers’ per se.  Their degree of experience would qualify them to participate in interdisciplinary professional teams involved in the production of urban design in a professional context.  Entry into this course requires an undergraduate degree in a related field with a weighted average of at least 60%  or as recognized by the Faculty on the recommendation of the AUDRC’s Academic Committee.  Students can choose to enter at either semester 1 or semester 2 but must seek adviceprior to enrolling from the AUDRC on structuring their studies.

Master of Urban Design (Coursework and Dissertation)

Students develop an in-depth understanding of urban design theories and issues; techniques of urban analysis;  and skills for the design and development of cities and urban places within a first year of focused studies in history, theory, implementation strategy and studio based learning; and a second year of independent supervised study.  The Master of Urban Design builds upon the Graduate Certificate and the Graduate Diploma by allowing students to devote the final two semesters to an exegesis and/or major design project, enabling students to accrue significant intellectual and creative experience commensurate with beginning a career as an urban designer. Students graduating with a Masters of Urban Design  are qualified to participate in all levels of the urban design profession and in particular to function as the lead consultant responsible for the production and critical evaluation of urban design proposals.  The demand for this program is in private planning, architectural and landscape design consultancies; local and stategovernment planning and development departments.  Entry in to this course requires an undergraduate degree in a related field with a weighted  average of at least 60%, and then a 65% weighted average upon completion of the Diploma. Students can choose to enter at either semester 1 or semester 2 but must seek advice prior to enrolling from the AUDRC on structuring their studies.
